Web hosting and domain names are two very different things, but you need both of them to build a website!

What is a Web Host?

Businesses that provide hosting are called “web hosts.” They store websites on servers. When the internet wants to view your website, all the user has to do is type in your domain name into a browser. The browser then redirects to the server your website is hosted on, and delivers the website to your browser.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the web address that you want your website to be, such as mine is courtneyjeanneprice.com!

Many web hosts will offer you a free domain name purchase when you purchase hosting with them. I want to point out that you do not have to purchase your domain name from the same place you purchase your hosting, but it does make things easier if you are just starting out, but sometimes it can be more expensive.

Recommended Web Hosts

I personally use Dreamhost for both my domain name purchases as well as hosting, but there are a variety of options out there. A lot of my clients have used BlueHost, which is having some great deals right now with hosting as low as $2.95 per month!
